It forms films with high mechanical strength and toughness, suitable for applications across a wide temperature range. These films resist most environments, including gamma radiation. It is substantially transparent to ultraviolet radiation. The weatherability of Hylar 5000 coatings results in exceptional durability. Hylar 5000 is available only through a specific licensing procedure specifying Hylar 5000 as the coating component. Properly formulated topcoats contain sufficient pigment to be completely opaque to ultraviolet radiation at a nominal film thickness of 1 mil (0.001 inch). Safety: Hylar 5000 is stable up to 600°F (316°C). Upon prolonged exposure above 600°F (316°C), decomposition occurs with the evolution of hydrogen fluoride (HF), which accelerates at temperatures above 700°F (371°C). Hylar 5000 has excellent flame resistance, but during a fire, HF and trace amounts of potentially toxic fluorocarbons may be formed. HF is corrosive and can cause contact burns; it has an American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) threshold limit value (TLV-TWA) of 3 ppm (2.5 mg/m³) (1984).
